Greene and Afton both fall to MAC opponents, 13-2
Norwich wins 3rd straight after rocky start to the season
DEPOSIT – The Greene Trojans fell behind early in the contest and had a hard time putting the bat on the ball in their 13-2 loss against Deposit/Hancock Thursday.
The Eagles scored 13 runs on 12 hits and one error and were offensively led by both Cole Russell and Raymond Rynearson. Russell and Rynearson each went 3-for-3 at the plate while teammate Caleb Walker rocked another home run, his second this week.
Greene scored their two runs in the top of the fifth inning as Grayson Flanagan drew a lead-off walk. Two batters later, the Trojans’ Nick Shoemaker landed on a first after watching ball four in the at-bat go past him. Flanagan, who was on third after a stolen base and a ground out by teammate Owen Howell, waited on the bag until Logan Kennedy sent a hard ground ball to the second baseman.
Flanagan scored the first run of the inning and on the same hit, Shoemaker came barreling across the plate to score the second of the frame.
However, Deposit/Hancock was able to get back those two runs and tack on another six in the bottom half of the inning, extending their lead to 12-2. The Eagles added one more in the bottom of the sixth.
Greene picked up four hits in the game – all coming by different batters in the line-up. Kolby Finch, Logan Kennedy, Brandyn Scott and Shoemaker were those Trojan hitters. The visiting team also drew 10 walks, putting runners on base for Greene to come away with seven stolen bases. Kennedy ended the night with two to lead in the stat column.
Rynearson earned the win for Deposit/Hancock on the mound, lasting four innings and allowing just two runs on two hits. He added two strike outs. Colleague Caden Fortunato threw two-thirds of an inning in relief to close out the contest.
Shoemaker took the loss for the Trojans, surrendering eight hits over four innings, striking out five.
Greene was looking to make it two in a row after an exciting win over Unatego Wednesday afternoon, taking the victory with a walk-off hit by Howell in the seventh.
Howell, who went 3-for-4 in Wednesday’s win, hit a fly ball on the first pitch that went in the direction of to the second baseman. The ball dropped in, sending Hogan Ludolph across the plate for the winning run.
Teammates Trent Repp and Flanagan went 2-for-4 to help the Trojans reach 10 hits in the game, each recording one double.
Repp also earned the win on the hill for Greene, pitching eight strikeouts and allowing just one run in the fourth. Prior to Repp toeing the rubber, Unatego held a 7-5 lead. The Spartans scored three in the first and added four more in the third.
The Trojans kept it close by answering in the bottom of the first with one run before taking the lead in the second with four runs.
Unatego’s Jacob Marshall and Kolby Packard led the Spartans at the plate, going went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Greene will look to bounce back when they host Oxford on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

AFTON – Visiting Walton built a two run at the end of the first and continued to build the lead throughout the game, scoring 13 while holding the host Crimson Knights to two runs to capture the 13-2 Midstate Athletic Conference win Thursday afternoon.
The Warriors scored three runs in the first inning but Afton answered, scoring one in the bottom half of the inning when Ernie Cutting smacked a line-drive single to left field. James Grover, who stole a base to sit on third during Cutting’s at-bat, came in to score on the contact.
The Crimson Knights however, we unable to another run up on the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth inning.
After Brady Buttice drew a walk, the bases were loaded for Grover as he stepped into the batter’s box. Battling in the 2-2 count, Grover grounded out to the first baseman but was able to score N Bagg in the process.

CHENANGO VALLEY – The Purple carried a two-game win streak into the game Wednesday afternoon after big wins over Oneonta and Chenango Forks. Norwich added to it with a win over Chenango Valley, stealing a 3-2 final score for their third straight.
The game was switched to Chenango Valley’s field due to the conditions of the Tornado’s diamond but Norwich was still listed on the home team, which helped in the victory.

Vinal reached the base paths with a triple that nearly went over the fence. The ball fell just short but the Norwich junior hustled around the bases to reach third.
Norwich added two runs in the third inning as Tanner Franklin and Vinal scored.
The Tornado’s Jordan Jacquette allowed four hits in the first three innings of play – two coming in the first – before settling in and throwing the ball to create contact. Norwich’s defense took care of the rest, committing no errors after the first inning.
“These are the types of games I like,” said Rich Turnbull, Norwich’s head coach. “I like getting a few runs to get a lead but letting our defense do the work.
“Jordan pitched a great game once he settled in. He just pitched to contact and had trust in his teammates behind him to get the job done. They did and that’s how you win ball games.
Norwich racked up five hits as team in the win while Jacquette tossed all seven innings for the complete game victory.
The Tornado are scheduled to play Friday against the Susquehanna Valley Sabers at home. Turnbull commented that the Sabers are the best team in Norwich’s league this season but is hoping with the momentum his team his carrying, they can come away with the upset.
